Bristol City Council Temporary event notice (England and Wales)

Before you start

Information you need to know before applying for a temporary event notice (TEN).

What you need to apply

You’ll need to pay £21 when applying to receive your TEN.

You'll need to provide:

  • your personal details, including national insurance number
  • premises details
  • event details, including:
    • date and times
    • expected attendance
    • activities provided
    • alcohol consumption location
  • information about any personal licences you hold, or any premises licences at the proposed location

Applicant requirements

To apply for a TEN, you must:

  • apply as an individual, not an organisation
  • be 18 years old or over
  • be planning any licensable activity at the event premises, such as:
    • selling alcohol
    • serving alcohol to members of a private club
    • providing entertainment, such as music, dancing or indoor sporting events
    • serving hot food or drink between 11pm and 5am

Event requirements

You cannot apply for an event that will:

  • exceed 499 people at any time, including staff
  • exceed 168 hours (7 days)
  • exceed 15 TEN events or 21 days in total each year (from 1 January)

Your event must be held in the Bristol City Council area. If the event premises has a postcode, use the Find your local council service to check that you are submitting your TEN to the correct council.

Your event must be held in either England or Wales.

TENs limits

If you have a personal alcohol licence, you can apply for a maximum of 50 TENs per year.

If you do not have a personal alcohol licence, you can apply for a maximum of 5 TENs per year.

Late TENs

You receive a late TEN if you apply within 5 and 9 working days before the event.

If you have a personal alcohol licence, you can receive a maximum of 10 late TENs each year.

If you do not have a personal alcohol licence, you can receive a maximum of 2 late TENs each year.

Deadline

You must apply at least 10 working days before your event starts.

If you apply within 5 to 9 working days before your event starts, you’ll receive a late TEN.

You cannot apply if you plan to start your event in less than 5 working days.
